First and foremost I believe that everyone can learn how to play the cello regardless of age or past musical experience. I firmly believe that the idea of 'inborn talent' is a complete myth. Learning how to play an instrument is instead a learned skill that requires both passion and a great deal of patience. I will be the first to admit that learning to play this instrument with complete fluency is not an easy task, but with the right approach anyone can do it!
Music as a language
My approach to this instrument can be likened to learning a new language. Let's assume you are a native English speaker without expereince with another foreign language and one day you are suddenly required to speak fluent Spanish. Chances are you wouldn't be able to do. Similarly you cannot expect to sit down with a cello and expect yourself to play a single note that is both in tune and has the quality of sound that you intend.
Speaking requires the manipulation and cordination of many facial muscles, and in order to speak fluently these are done without any thought. But if you are fluent in a language chances are you had to practice making and replicating those sounds at some point. So when I speak of playing the cello with fluency it means that the cellist has a deep understanding of how they have to manipulate their instrument to get the sound they want, and to be able to do it without thought.
